Termcom Crash Course
Hello everyone, here is my (s23adhik) opinionated way on preparing for Termcom!
Get you're membership!
Familiarizing yourself with CSC's Infra
So CSC generally documents it's infra pretty well, so in my opinion the best way to get familiar with CSC & it's history is to visit the Special:Random page like a 10-20 times, and read a bunch of random pages.
Then you're ready to try and ssh in! (How to SSH)
Once you're completed that, setup your eMail account, and test sending emails to it!
Now that your account has been setup, and email logged into, try logging into your account, and going into the www in your home folder, and placing a file, then go to https://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/~%5BYOUR_WATIAM%5D/and see if you can see the file/contents of it!
Once you've completed that, you're basically ready for termcom!
Generally ask the Sysadmin, Termcom lead, or whoever is in charge of training you to give you tasks, or in many cases, ask to do things yourself! It saves us (syscom) a lot of energy if you have an idea that you want to work on yourself and only need permission.
Additional Notes:
- Not everything will get approved, there are boundaries, i.e I don't treat CSC like your personal homelab, it is a shared homelab
- If you forget your password or need to reset it, go to https://csclub.uwaterloo.ca/ceo/pwreset
- Drop by the office time to time, there are a lot of knowledgeable people there who can often help you out.
